This session explores how a multidisciplinary team moved beyond "problem-solving" toward a portfolio approach - facilitating a shift in the state's healthcare landscape that eventually led to the legalization and opening of the first safe consumption sites in the United States.
This presentation will begin by setting the context, tracing the history and underlying “logics” of the opioid epidemic. It will then move into the methodology, explaining the shift from isolated, linear projects to a portfolio of interconnected interventions. Next, it will introduce the tools used in this work such as design studios, co-designing with people with lived experience, and using media as a form of provocation.
The session will conclude by reflecting on outcomes, particularly how to measure “loose correlation” and long-term systemic transitions, followed by a Q&A that dives deep into the challenges of staying committed to a complex problem over five years or more.
